June 2016 Noozletter – Tokyo, Karlsruhe, and the Périgord

Greetings! I hope this finds you well.

Behold our June Noozletter.

As someone once said “Summer is a promissory note signed in June, its long days spent and gone before you know it, and due to be repaid next January.”

March 2016 Noozletter: Valencia Manhattan Brooklyn Boston and more

Greetings! I hope this finds you well. This month our Noozletter breaks yet another record. Dammit, I knew those 78rpm shellac recordings were too damn delicate to frisbee. No, not that kind of record – THIS kind of record.: We’re publishing on time twice in the past six months. We sure must have a lot of time on our hands.

Actually to the contrary, things have been quite busy in our Tokyo headquarters. Not only have we been hard at work planning for our upcoming spring concerts (with details below) but also working on a commission for a new multi-channel work for the BEAST system in Birmingham UK (April), concerts in France (June) and the launch of a new project with Germany based artist/composer Miki Yui (“Realistic Monk”) that is planning to tour in Europe this September. More information on these things in the newsletters to come, and of course you can also stay up to date by keeping your eye on our newly refreshed and refurbished website, http://www.sukothai.com or our Facebook page. Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus. DIEM ElekTro concert series

Carl Stone presents his evening length work FUJIKEN (富士軒)

FUJIKEN was composed between 2012 and 2013 in Tokyo where Carl Stone resides for much of the year. The work blends field recordings made through Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Japan) with appropriated music mostly from street cassettes, processed and resynthesized. The work has no set structure and although some sections have been more or less determined as to their materials and methods of manipulation, the overall form as well as the smaller musical details are open and improvised. Field materials tonight might include recorded meandering on the Chao Praya river (Bangkok), a fire outbreak in Phnom Pehn, college sports practice in Toyota City Japan, and whatever else the mood might seek.

Steve Smith, New York Times:
“(Carl Stone’s) music was a powerful stimulant with lingering euphoric effects. Voices stretched like taffy were folded into ghostly choruses; the whine of a stringed instrument became a mosquito arabesque. Noises normally rejected, like surface scrapes and static bursts, provided fertile sonic lodes.”

Jonathan Gold, Los Angeles Times:
” Is Carl Stone celebrated today for his tendency to name his opuses after his favorite restaurants – Kong-Joo and Sukothai instead of Serenade or Sonata in C# minor? Perhaps. It makes the pieces evocative of a specific time and place, and hints at the trans-global origins of the source material, while maintaining an almost absolute level of abstraction. How did he arrive on bricolage as an aesthetic strategy? Feed him a glass of Suntory and he may confess that it may have arisen from a work-study job in the uncrowded Cal Arts music library when he was an undergraduate, a job that put tens of thousands of recordings at his disposal and countless hours in which to listen to them.”

NEW 3-LP ALBUM NOW RELEASED

medium_uw15_lp-cover_web
CARL STONE Electronic Music from the Seventies and Eighties

“a missing link, not only in the history of avant-garde and electronic music, but within the entire body of arranged sound (popular or otherwise).” – The Hum

“stunning …. full of purring drones that at first appear to hardly be moving, only to have them slowly slide and reveal infinite amounts of overtones…lovely, prickly, meditative, and maddening” – Pitchfork

“The eight pieces ….on this three-LP collection of pioneering work by American electro-acoustic composer Carl Stone constitute an oft-mesmerizing two-and-a-half hours…(Shing Kee is) spellbinding.” – Textura

“Astounding …dizzying hall-of-mirrors refractions built from tiny fragments of Asian pop, American R&B and classical…. Stone’s resourcefulness and originality is unmistakable, and these sounds remain fresh decades later.”
Best of Bandcamp Contemporary Classical: November 2016

“It lights up our pleasure centres like a quid in a fruit machine….It’s all totally new to us and feels like somebody just opened a big skylight onto our listening lives, flooding us with new sensations……Not to be missed by anyone with a taste for innovative electronic music of the rarest order.” – Boomkat

“Jaw-dropping maximalist achievement, done so through a minimalist methodology…..compositions that, much like the CalArts music library Stone spent many of his hours in, reveal endless surprises and delights upon each listen….incredibly rewarding album.” – Zurkonics
