Carl will present his latest work Chinjuuya (珍獣屋) composed especially for the BEAST system, as part of the annual BEAST FEaST Festival of Music and Ideas, which will take place in Birmingham UK April 28-30, 2016. The BEAST diffusion system uses multiple channels of separately amplified loudspeakers, whose differing characteristics make them appropriate for a particular position or function. The system includes arrays of tweeters (high frequency speakers which can be suspended over the audience), sub-woofers (low frequency speakers) and full-range speakers of varying characteristics and from different manufacturers. The performer is able, via a custom-built diffusion desk or a computer interface, to create a variety of sound images, and to ‘sculpt’ the spatial, dynamic and dramatic implications of the music in a particular performance environment in order to interpret and realize the composer’s intentions. The festival itself draws audiences from around the UK and farther afield, and will include works by over 30 artists from dozens of countries, in seven concerts and three sessions of talks across three days of activities.

Carl joins up with the unique rubber fetish performance artist SAEBORG for a set that will almost certainly astound. Department H will takes place every month in the historic Tokyo Kinema, a large ballroom from the Showa era in the heart of Tokyo’s Shitamachi (downtown). The doors open at midnight (technically June 5th) and the event proceeds until dawn. Carl’s set with SAEBORG will take place at 1:45 AM. Realistic Monk – the title a simple anagram of the names of its members – is a new performance project from Carl Stone in collaboration with artist and composer Miki Yui. Our debut performance was in Düsseldorf 2015, at the Elektro-Müller Studio as part of the Open Space Festival. With the enthusiastic response from the sold out audience, we decided to continue performing together and are currently arranging performances in Europe for September 2016.
Realistic Monk concentrates on smaller sounds, sometimes at the edge of perception. We encourage concentrated listening as we create deep soundscapes that emerge out of voices, noises, field recordings and acoustic feedback.
