Berkeley Maybeck Recital Hall

Saturday March 25 2006 8 PM

Carl joins forces with pianist Sarah Cahill to present an evening of Stone’s music, including new works for solo laptop, as well as ESCA, the piano work composed for Sarah in 2003, and the venerable HO BAN, from 1984. An evening of musical rarities and niceties, in a special setting.

Maybeck Recital Hall was designed by the architect Bernard Maybeck, who is also known for designing the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco and the Christian Science Church in Berkeley. The exterior resembles a Spanish villa while the interior features beautiful redwood lining, tall cathedral ceilings and slim Gothic windows that dominate each end of the hall. Maybeck Recital Hall is both beautiful and acoustically marvelous. Seating for this concert is limited to 40, and reservations are strictly required. Please use the phone number or email address to reserve, or for further information.

Filmmaker Pat O’Neill joins Carl Stone, for the first night of “Distributed Memory: Live Music and Projected Images,” a two-part program of projected images and live music featuring original visuals and sound that explore the various methods through which artists recompose found materials—from sources as varied as old field recordings, film noir clips, 24-hour cable newscasts, , engravings, drawings, and photographs and discarded technology. The series continues the following evening with a second distinct program, featuring premieres of new collaborative artworks, commissioned, in part, by Montalvo Arts Center, as well as individual pieces from the artists’ existing repertoires.

Los Angeles REDCAT at Disney Hall

    Sunday October 8 2006 14h00

A special screening of Adam Beckett’s work at the REDCAT theater. The iotaCenter is presenting a program “(re) Discovering the Work of Adam Beckett”, the gifted animator who died tragically in 1979 at the age of 29.

This event will feature his five recently restored titles - “Evolution of the Red Star” (music by Carl Stone), “Heavy Light” (music by Barry Schrader), “Sausage City”, “Flesh Flows” and “Kitsch in Synch”. Adam’s biographer, Pamela Turner will introduce the program and present stories, drawings and photographs.

This is a chance to see Carl’s very first film soundtrack, created in 1973 when he was still a student at CalArts!

For more information about Adam Beckett you can take a look at http://www.iotacenter.org/projects/beckett

The films are beautifully restored - thanks to the very discerning work of Mark Toscano at the Academy Film Archive.

This screening is included in CalArts’ “Fragments from a Lover’s Discourse - Highlights from the Museum of Modern Art’s Tomorrowland: CalArts in Moving Pictures” program running that weekend at REDCAT.

    $8 (general) $6 (students) $4 (CalArts students)

    Voice and Machine!

Featuring Carl bringing his unique compositional sensibilities to bear on samples of the human voice.+ almglocken (Ikeda Takmi & Suzuki Etsuko, where lovely electronic sounds, occasionally reminiscent of classical avantgarde electronic music, collide with words and voice, and new meaning rises from the impact) + Skist (Ito Haruna & Samm Bennett, whose sinuous vocal melodies weave through a latticework of Africanesque rhythm, rich harmonic drones and electronic crackle. The ever-shifting balance of primal musical elements in a near-mystical union of the cyclic and the random.).
